This triggered memories of my brother Stuart and I exploring the Beck Bank along Snuff Mill Lane, fishing for newts, frogs and sticklebacks in the water. The Mill, on Snuff Mill Lane, was a combined wind and water mill. It was used over the centuries for corn, paper, snuff and finally for cloth and bagging (for the seed-crushing industry in Hull). It was in disuse by 1900, and in my childhood the only remaining evidence of the mill itself was the mill-race entry.
